day 15 – sea day

it’s finally the final sea day before easter island… looking forward to land ho!!!  it’s kind of like being in outer space to be at sea for any stretch of time without seeing land – similar to other recent sea day reports, in that i went to my writing class, had lunch, etc… the sea days begin to run together a little bit when there’s more than two in a row, and we are on #4…

my theme night was a tribute to the music of tony bennett… i love him!  i remember when i still lived in anchorage and my dad and johnny (nino’s dad) sent me and my mom to a tony bennett concert for mother’s day at the atwood concert hall – not only is the sound perfect there, but he was perfect!  he had, of course, the amazing ralph sharon jazz trio accompanying him, and the thing that’s so incredible about tony bennett is how much fun he has and how effortless he makes it all seem!  his voice is still magic even as he gets older, and tho he’s probably lost a few high notes off his range, he’s lost none of his warmth or charm…

my absolute favorite tony bennett memories are of the album (i had it on cassette) “steppin’ out with my baby,” which was pretty much in constant heavy rotation (along with mel torme’s “songs of new york,” or “the shoo-be-doop songs!”, as little nino would say) when i was home with nino when he was a baby and a toddler… i remember dancing in the kitchen or living room with him at least a million times and singing with him… it’s because of this that i can’t to this day do any of the tunes off either of those album’s without thinking of baby nino!  last night i got to do several, and whenever i do “i concentrate on you” by cole porter from that tony album, i get a little verklempt in my gnechtagazoink, it’s true…

anyway, the guests caved a little early (11-ish) tonight because we are anticipating early morning easter island excursions… even my hard core last set peeps... crossing fingers that the weather is good enough for us to be able to disembark…  wish us luck!  cheers!  df (mama)
