day 2 - sea day
i love sea days! some people don’t, but i feel i get more things done and always have time to get stuff done… and luckily, i don’t get seasick (i’m one of those weirdos that actually enjoys it when it’s rough, or ‘swoopy’ as nino or i might call it…) spinning the topic wheel, can i just say right here and now that i am in love with my new ipad? yes, it’s love… it is a wonder… a marvel… did i say that i love it? a stack of music fake books that would go up to the ceiling on pdf files, as well as scanned sheet music and notebooks full of lyrics my saint of a husband poured hours into implementing on this sleek and amazing new friend (i have named it louise)… i am so psyched to have such an immense resource library literally at my fingertips and no more cluttered up bandstand… set lists neatly organized, topics grouped in folders, theme sets, it’s amazing! if i barely tilt my piano music rack up about 2” and set the ipad, i mean louise, on it, no one even knows i have music up there… granted, it is important as a piano bar entertainer to have a lot of stuff in your head so you can connect with your audience instead of being buried in a book or a laptop… however, tho i know hundreds of songs by heart at this point in my life, you may note that there are millions of tunes out there, so it is certainly better to be able to accommodate a request rather than saying, “oh, sorry, don’t know that one…” generally, once i have played a song about 20-25 times, it will then get stuck in my head whether i like it or not… and most of what i use is just lyric sheets – the music i can usually figure out on the fly… besides, nothing in the books is ever in my key… but words are words, so until they are learned, i look at ‘em… day 2’s theme was “on the road”, good traveling songs, etc… we also had a singalong hour (highlights: “those were the days” and “king of the road”), and the poser stumper song of the night was a lesser known (clearly!) cole porter number from a show called 50 million frenchmen entitled “Tale of the Oyster”. the man who requested it assures me it’s quite hilarious, so i’ll have to find it, tho louise knows nothing of it despite her voluminous brainpan, so it’s time to research… cheers, df
