day 3 – grand cayman

this is a tender port (no dock) run by local tenders rather than our ship’s tenders – we had to anchor in spots bay rather than georgetown due to dangerous shoals – as the guests get to get off first, and as open tenders didn’t occur til 11:30, and the free limited shuttles were to be given guest preference, and since our purser had not yet reimbursed my travel moneys (bags, dinner at hotel), i knew i wouldn’t have cash for a cab… also knew that in time to get my compulsory ems training done and get song of the day written and get a rest before gig, it would be tight… oh, wow!  just realized i don’t even have my crew id card anyway since computer was frozen even at 8pm last night and they have not made my ship id card yet – well, since i can’t disembark without ship id, it is officially a moot point – i am staying on the ship… oh well… i went to cayman last time i was doing panama canal cruise and it was nice, and i’ll live if i have to miss it today… but what to draw upon for a port song if i don’t go into port?  hmmm….

port song for georgetown, cayman islands
(to the tune of anne murray’s “could I have this dance for the rest of my life”)

i’ll always remember our world voyage first port,
it was both sunny and cloudy that day
since conditions near georgetown were so fraught with peril,
we anchored instead in spots bay
if you like finance, grand cayman they say
has a different world bank you can go to each day
it ranks 5th worldwide in value of liability,
you’ll love it if offshore banking’s your cup of tea

all big four auditors and major accountants,
like deloitte and good old ernst and young
have established themselves on the island of grand cayman
mixing money and sunshine and rum
almost 40 billion bucks under asset mngmt,
if a hedge fund’s your thing, grand cayman is where it’s at
it’s also a smugglers haven they say,
and they’re developing some posh spots near camana bay

over 30,000 people make their home on grand cayman;
georgetown’s their capital and hub
a 400 million dollar town center on the street called paseo,
home to restaurants, shops, cafes & clubs
the crescent 7 mile beach w/it’s markets and shows,
it’s january here & there sure ain’t no snow
if i was a wall st. pirate, well that’s where i’d go,
where the money moves fast, but the island time’s slow

ciao! df
