day 97 – naples, italy - day one

flag on top of 8th century castle by the waterfront

we are in naples for a couple of days!  we had wanted to go to the archeolgical museum, but found out it is closed on tuesdays, so we decided instead to do the hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus.  it was a double decker, open air on top, and on this beautiful spring day, we headed for the upper level.  they gave us little headsets to hear the tour guide with songs of napoli between information… it was great!  the coast here is quite beautiful, and we went through some very nice neighborhoods… great view of the hills of naples as well as mt. vesuvius looming across the way…

as soon as we got hungry, we decided to find a pizzaria, since napoli is the birthplace of pizza.  we wandered awhile, passed a few possible spots, found lots of shops and street vendors, some great little markets, and finally stopped being so picky and went in the next pizza place we found.  there was kind of a grumpy guy who seated us, and he spoke no english.  we could figure out the menu enough to pick what we wanted, and he brought us some table wine, bruschetta (which is pronounced broos-ketta, not broo-shetta like everyone always says…) and, after a bit, some excellent pizza!  after lunch i pointed to my camera, and he motioned for me to come into the kitchen to see the oven, so i snapped a coupla pics, we paid and thanked him and left.

lovely!

gelato!  yum!
we decided to walk back to the ship since it wasn’t too far, and looked for gelato (italian ice cream) on the way back.  we didn’t find the real deal til we were back in the ship terminal shop area, and had some excellent gelato (pistachio for bob, coffee for me).  i also picked up some nice spice mixes for pasta from a lovely sales lady who also did not speak english, but we understood each other.  she said something to her son before we paid, and he said it was to the effect of us being a nice, in love couple… awww!!!  it’s a far cry from oman, where they don’t really appreciate that sort of dynamic!

we had time for a rest, and then played to not so many folks, as it is an overnight port night… my theme was “mambo italiano,” which featured any songs i know with any italian phrases at all as well as the music of famous italian americans (tony bennett, frank sinatra, etc.).  it went well, and i wrapped a little early.  we have another day in naples tomorrow, and bob and i are taking a crew tour to the ruins of nearby pompeii tomorrow, so going to get some rest!  ciao, me
